Happy Cinco de Nuggie aka Celebrate Your Loved Ones

May 5, 2013 by MsCheevious

Happy Cinco de Nuggie!  aka Celebrate Your Loved Ones!

Today M.C. Nugget and I are celebrating his birthday. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Every May 5th, all those who love Nuggie commune together to rejoice over his birthday… a tradition that has gone back… well…. decades.

So on this day when I’m running around like a chicken (pun intended) with my head cut off to ready the beach palace for a morning toast with friends, I’d like to remind you of a little something everyone should know about Cinco de Nuggie:

Contrary to Cinco de Nuggie’s counterpart Cinco de Mayo (only a counterpart because it is celebrated on the same day) — which commemorates the victory of the Mexican Militia over the French Army at The Battle Of Puebla, in the Franco-Mexican War of 1862… and though many confuse Cinco de Mayo to be Mexico’s Independence Day – it is not (that is on September 16th)… Cinco de Nuggie is a celebration of Independence.  It commemorates the great “labor” dispute which took place in a hospital many years ago (not too many, mind you), when M.C. Nugget fought and was victorious in his Battle for In-Utero Independence. For this we all celebrate and are eternally grateful.

All kidding aside, I actually celebrate (the case could be made that I monumentalize) the birthdays… or any special days in my loved ones lives. These days in their lives are the few occasions that can stop time in my world. All work is shoved to the back burner, other commitments  delayed or postponed. It’s because I love them TONS certainly, but the special days also provide me a vital creative outlet… and I mean vital as in “you better not try to take my ceremony or festive concoction away from me… I’ll cut you”  vital.  I think I’ve established in the first few paragraphs here just how “creative” I can be. My poor kids… think of their pain.

All that aside, Nuggie and I have a full, fun day of his design planned, actually. We’ll be toasting with friends, walking to brunch on Main Street in Santa Monica, and then carousing among the drunken strangers celebrating his rival holiday, Cinco de Mayo. He’s a team player however, so he’s donning a sombrero.

CincodeNuggie

Have a beautiful day and week you lovely men and women. Remember: CELEBRATE your loved ones with fervor. They are what make our lives worth every single moment.

Love you people!!!! Mmmmmmpppphhhuuuhhh!!!

xoxo,

Ms. Cheevious

Presents, Even If You Don’t Want Them

November 15, 2012 by MsCheevious

One of the things I dislike most about the internet (and there isn’t a whole lot, because I love to engage with people this way. When done well, it’s so f-ing cool), is when websites squander too much of my time on a whole lotta nothin’. I dislike it even more when that “nothing” has even less to do with the title of the piece.

If your title is somewhat elusive, or a non sequitur like “Parenthood: A Panic Disorder” make the content interesting and clever, would ya?  I simply loved learning that the “Panic” (in said favorite blog post) came from the fact that the recent time change handed the writer’s young child six hits of acid and said to her,

listen, you’re going to want to take all of these at the same time. Don’t worry about hiding it from your mother. When you start to see the purple dancing elephants, chase them through the house. Narrate everything out loud*.

That’s what I’m talking about.

This comes to mind now, because I was looking around the internet at some of my lovey girls‘ websites, when I came upon a “Holiday Gift Guide.”  Aside from this little “reminder” annoying me (and aside from the fact it is not yet Thanksgiving), it caused the ever so slightest heart palpitation in me.

The real stress came from facing my need to buy presents square in the face…

Presents, that is, for MC Nugget, my two boys and several other people I apparently care enough about to spend money on. More than that, this Holiday Buying Guide just seemed way too freaking early (sigh… it’s not. I’m just not ready to be on that “page” right now).

But after the stress wore off, my initial thought was, hey… maybe I’ll do a buying guide. I could offer the very cool Ms. Cheevious Luggage Tags (hint: they’re in the side bar on the website) and my very own “Humbug Schmumbug, I Want Presents” Line of Tee Shirts, coffee mugs and more (my über talented sister Par-Tay took my painting & created an incredible design), well HELL,  I’d be in business!

These are the tags, in case you are curious.

But no. You see, when I started writing this, I had the luggage tags and tee shirts. That’s TWO products. And two frigging products maketh no buying “guide.” Two products is more of a buying “suggestion” or buying “nudge.”

Okay, so forget the fact that the very next day … after I began writing this, my fabulous sister and I buckled down and now have a full-fledged Humbug SHOP up and running, but still… It’s just not a guide, per se.

After I watched as several other nutty ideas for a “guide” swirled around my skull for a few moments (“Girls Want Presents” and “The Buying Guide of Stuff Girls Want” just two of the brilliant moments) I made a decision.

I will not do it.  Nope. I won’t subject you to any undo stress, heartaches, freak-outs or fainting spells.

But you must know this:  “It” is coming. Oh yes it is. The clock will not stop for you… and we now know what that time change is capable of…

Whether you celebrate Deepavali (day of love and light, which already happened), Quanza, Chanukah, Christmas or Joe’s Crab Tasting, there are probably presents involved – even if you don’t want them to be (notice the emphasis and red font, which categorically relieves me of my title-of-post tie-in responsibility?).

It’s time to grow up and get responsible kiddies.  Yep… You must ALLOW the idea of PRESENTS to enter your brain, even if you don’t want them there (yes… again).

And with that… I’m leaving you with —- wait for it — a CHRISTMAS song. Shameless and sacrilegious as it is before Thanksgiving. I apparently do want to subject you to slow suffering and pain, while you face your present-buying demons head-on. What’re you going to do? Not buy me a present? Well that’s a little harsh. It’s a Muppets song. Anyone can forgive the Muppets.

If you’re seeing this in your email, click here to listen/watch on Youtube. Just do it.

That’s it for now, my lovelies.  If at all possible, I will post a very special edition Thanksgiving post. Wait for it.

Love you people!!!!! Mmmmpppphhhuuuhhh!!!!

xoxo,

Ms. Cheevious

My Man, A Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and Replacement Refs

November 5, 2012 by MsCheevious

Admit it. The title grabbed you, didn’t it?  My Man, a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and Replacement Refs? And I’d wager a bet it was the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader that made you click. I prefer to think it was mention of my man that made ya’ click, but since, for all you know, my guy is a big yellow chicken named M.C. Nugget, I’m guessing the latter was the draw. It certainly wasn’t the replacement refs.  And what the heck was that about anyway?  Replacement refs? That was an exercise in futility if there ever was one.

Speaking of which, did anyone see the “Replacements” with Keanu Reeves?  He’s a cutie isn’t he? That movie has absolutely nothing to do with replacement refs, but hey, they could make a film called “The Replacement Refs.” If they cast Keanu I’d watch it. I really would.

Yeah, there’s nothing like good, strong references to sexy pro football cheerleaders, Keanu Reeves and replacement refs to attract both the men and the women to the blog! But let’s get to it, shall we?

The other night, Nuggie and I went to a Halloween party. No, it wasn’t the party at the Playboy Mansion that I talked about in another (shhh) blog. It was a party thrown by some friends at DirtyandThirty.com.  We had a great time at this party.  There were plenty of gorgeous Hollywood types, as usual. The party was held at the new Redbury Hotel, which we’d wanted to check out ever since it opened.  It was refreshing this year to attend a party not totally about sexy, slutty costumes. I’m sure there was crying in the men’s rooms that night as a result, but on the outside, M.C. and all the other guys put on their game faces, patronizing me (and all the other women) by agreeing they were very impressed with the costume creativity of the guests.

Some would say the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader costume is a sexy costume, and granted, this particular cheerleader looked great! But we’ve seen less coverage, and I must admit, though I am all for the eye candy that results from sexy nurses, pirates, belly dancers, etc. it was… NICE!  It felt as if we’d stepped into a Hollywood venue full of creative types or something… Oh wait.

But one of the greatest costumes (at least I thought) were two girls who dressed as the Replacement Refs. I wish I’d thought of it.  They were perfect too.  They had a copy of “Football for Dummies” with them, and were making all kinds of mistake “calls” all night.  It was pretty priceless.

We had fun, we rocked the place, and we got out.

Then we went out for a late night breakfast at another place we love in Hollywood called Kitchen 24. If you don’t live in LA and plan to visit, make a stop there. It’s one of the best late-night dining spots around.

So we played, drank and ate bad food late at night… we truly enjoyed a good ole’ fashioned late night out in Hollywood.  Ahhhhh, just the way I like it.

But now I’m tired. Just remembering the night makes me want to curl up on my feather bed. What has become of me?

Tune in next time for a special guest post from Ms. Marrie Lobel. You remember her. She wrote the fabulous piece about being glad she is a woman, which ROCKED.

Love you people!  Mmmmppphhhuuuhhh!!!

Remembering…

May 27, 2012 by MsCheevious

Before you dive in, let me first say, this article is not about our wonderful troops – incredible as they are, and so worthy of remembering and honoring.  This post will aim to go much deeper, and hopefully turn your eyes, your mind and your heart toward home — toward the people you’ve lost or simply lost touch with, whether they’ve served our country or not.  It will make an effort to turn your thoughts toward connections, which, though sometimes cut off or broken, should never be forgotten.

That said, let’s not forget on this Memorial Day in the United States, why it was was established in the first place: as a special day to remember those who’ve died in our nation’s service.

One can sense the lack of enthusiasm for this as you travel west from the cradle of our nation’s birth (near Boston), and continue as far as the land of the Wild Wild West and the Cradle of our Nation’s Gold Rush. It seems that if a person has grown up in a state that lacks the monuments for the Revolutionary War or the Civil War history, they’re less likely to feel a deep sense of tradition or responsibility to acknowledge those who were tortured, shredded by shrapnel or torn by explosions while serving our country. Even though many did this out of passion for a belief, and to accomplish what they truly felt was DAMN RIGHT on behalf of our country and our people, it’s not something people truly remember or feel something for these days.

I’m not sure WHAT it takes to rally the passions (and actions to back it up) among us these days.  And if you point me to Occupy Wallstreet I will hurl.

Also, if you ask people to participate in your reality or comedy series, or a flash mob you’ve got game.  Talk to them about devoting their life to ANYTHING and you lose them before you can squeak out “devo…”

I’m sure this doesn’t apply to everyone, but it’s prevalent.  Why do you think Occupy Wallstreet was met with such mixed response?  Scratch that.  Don’t answer that. We’re not going there today. Let’s get back to the crux of this piece…

This article is about you and me.  It’s about the connections we’ve made with very important people in our lives, or along the way in our journeys.  It’s about not allowing those memories of people who impacted us to simply sit or fade away.

I love Memorial Day for the depth it can carry. While many people in the U.S. are grilling, socializing and reveling in the fun of the long holiday weekend, I think it is also important to realize the reason we are on holiday.

This Memorial Day I wish to remember people I call heroes in my world.

1) My dad, otherwise known as Orville Joe Sherwood, or Papa Joe to his grandkids is my hero.  He is first here on the list because though he didn’t die in our nation’s service, he served for a full lifetime as an enlisted man, and left the Navy as Chief Petty Officer when he retired.  He is a hero because he was the net that surrounded and supported my mom and kept all eleven of us kids in line when we needed it most. I miss him when I see things happen now in our family that should never happen. I have to ask if he’d been around longer than his short 65 years, would things be different?  Though I’m not sure, I seem to think so.  He is a HERO to me and all of my family, as well as many of his best friends who remembered him well throughout his life.  He was the happy-go-lucky man who was a wonderful compliment to his wife – my mom. My dad smoked cigarettes, and suffered for years through Emphysema and heart disease before he was killed by a cancer none of us knew even existed.  He passed away in March of 1988.

2) My mother Nereide Francis Padalino Sherwood is my hero, God bless the woman.  She (like dad) was raised during the Great Depression in a single parent home. This made for one TOUGH woman. But she held to the love of her life – the Catholic Church – with all its rules and regulations, and despite the trends of the day, kept getting pregnant and HAVING all those kids. THANK GOD, because I am number TEN of ELEVEN kids she had.  I’m sure she THANKED GOD as well, because I was her favorite. Yep.  I said that. But the thing that makes my mom a hero is her attitude.  My mom was the one who made all of us feel as though we could and WOULD accomplish anything we put our minds to. If we wanted something all we needed to do was work toward it to make it happen. There was never a question in her mind, and subsequently in my mind. She is also the one who laughed at herself and at life.  She taught us to laugh at the same things. So of course, we all laughed at her, and then, yes, we laughed at ourselves. A classic line my mom is remembered for, which busted up (for some, to the point of tears), all who were present: “Ohhhh!  What a BONER!”  She MEANT to say ‘what a bummer’, and we knew it but we CRACKED up and never let her live it down. She laughed at herself then too. She was Lucille Ball incarnate, and I like to think that I follow in her footsteps in that regard.  It’s my badge of honor.

3) My beautiful, vibrant and larger than life sister Mimi – or Mary Louise Sherwood Larimore (also known as Maven in Ms. Cheevious-land). She was the sister who was closest in age to me, so of course she is my hero. Had she never come home from shopping with her girlfriends in eighth grade, having spent her allowance to buy me a Donny Osmond album, it wouldn’t have mattered. I idolized her anyway. But she did that, and I was forever in awe. On top of her good heart and incredibly hilarious wit, she was the one in the family who could cut through all the bullshit and called a spade a spade. PERIOD. No harm, no foul. If you heard the wrath of Mimi it was because you probably deserved it.  On the flip side, if she unleashed on you in error she was the first to inform everyone she’d made the error and ask for forgiveness. She was REAL, FUNNY, BOLD and COURAGEOUS. She took each of those intense qualities with her to the grave when she lost her 7 year battle with Ovarian Cancer. She is my all-time hero. I loved her and the wound is still open and raw, but I remember her and I never want to forget.

Mimi Sherwood Larimore - a.k.a. Maven

Who is it for you? Who are the people in your world who you’d like to remember? Perhaps it’s someone who is still alive, but you’ve lost touch.  Whatever the case, I encourage you to spend a few minutes on this Memorial Day to put some thought and purpose into the holiday – after you’ve had your fun, if necessary. It is so important to remember those people that have elicited change or at minimum, thoughtfulness in our lives.  It is the ultimate show of respect to think of them today, and if they are alive, perhaps even let them know you thought of them in such a way.

Enjoy your day everyone!  Tune in next time for something truly amazing.

Love you people!!!!! Mmmmppphhhuuuhhhh!!!!

xoxo,

Ms. Cheevious

My Phantom Ovary

January 18, 2012 by MsCheevious

There is something you should know before reading any further:  I had my ovaries and tubes taken out on January 6, 2012.

And I mean that literally.  You really SHOULD know this.  If you read my blogs with the stalker-like commitment I’ve come to know and love, and I’ve worked so hard to teach you, you’d KNOW I was having all these big procedures.

In any case, if you did NOT know, well, now you do. In a nutshell- I have the BRCA2 Genetic Mutation for Breast and Ovarian Cancer.  That’s some scary medical speak for “my [cancer] risk is bigger than your risk. So there.”

These “big procedures” were all proactive.  There was no stinkin’ cancer there.  But I’m not one to play against the odds.  I like to win.

Anyway – on to my story.

M.C. Nugget* and I were talking about this whole thing the day after my procedure (that would be the Saturday before last).  We discussed whether the hormone medications they prescribed seemed to be working, what were the pros and cons of medical pills vs. all natural, etc.  Then Nuggie said, “Well you seem like you’re in pretty good spirits…”  in a hopeful, sweet, timid  ‘I-hope-she-won’t-hurt-me’ tone (mwaahha ha haaaaa).

Let me back things up here a bit and remind you that I chose to split my various medical procedures up.  I opted to have a double mastectomy as well as my tubes and ovaries removed (you can read more in “I’m Too Sexy For My Genes“). I underwent the double mastectomy and reconstruction first.  The reason I did not opt to undergo both surgeries at once was because it was just before the holidays, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. What would the recovery be like, and more importantly, would I be a hormonal mess?  Would I be running around trying to get ready for the holidays, with my hair on fire? Would I suffer alternating bouts of uncontrollable laughter, to screaming… then weeping? (and we’re only talking about Nuggie here!)   So, I did myself and everyone else around me a favor by splitting them up.

Nuggie’s comment about my “good spirits” was in reference to our jokes about that.

We then had a witty little discourse that went something like this:

ME: You know, my sister Ice Tay* had a full hysterectomy, and I remember she use to still suffer the effects of PMS. I’m not sure if she still does.

NUGGIE: Really? Like mood swings and cramps and stuff?

ME: Yep.  So, you never know.  I could be all happy one minute, and then – BAM – It’s just like I never lost my ovaries. What is it that people who lose a limb suffer from?

NUGGIE: You mean Phantom Limb? (laughing)

ME:  Yeah! That’s it.  I might get Phantom Ovary, ya never know. So watch out.

We laughed of course — mostly at how funny we think we are.  But it was a good laugh, for sure.

Then, (and there is always a “then”) I woke up this morning with that familiar achy, lower back pain that would visit me now and then, pre-ovary removal.  OY.  Could it be??? Phantom Ovary!!! AHHHHHH!!!!

All I can say is, for the sake of all I know and love, I hope not — or — GOD HELP THEM.

That’s it my lovelies.  That’s all I got.  Have a lovely week!  Be sure to keep tuning in to youtube, and reading these posts, because Nuggie is preparing a video of our good times from 2012 – and with some NEVER BEFORE SEEN FOOTAGE!

Love you people!!!!! Mmmmppphhhuuuhhh!!!

xoxo,

Ms. Cheevious

*For you newbies out there, Nuggie, aka M.C. Nugget, and Emcee Nugget, is my beau – also formerly known as Fred the Wonder Chicken or FWC.  Ice Tay is one of my sisters. I assign “aliases” to all of my friends and family, so their antics and embarrassing moments can remain anonymous.  I am the only person I know who doesn’t care if people know what I’ve been up to.

It’s Time to Delve Into Twelve

January 11, 2012 by MsCheevious

If you’re at all like me, you found yourself simply cruising through the holidays, way back in 2011, just trying to survive. Thoughts of resolutions were the furthest things from your mind. More important to deal with were the little (or not so little) family dramas, the last minute shopping, wrapping gifts (or handing out dreidels)  and the burnt cookies.

Then suddenly, everyone was talking about resolutions, as if they’d been planning theirs for months. You know, come to think of it, it really annoys me when people come out with resolutions, and then back them up with these “all-knowing” statements,  as if suddenly they are the definitive experts in their resolution’s field… Here are a couple of examples, (and I’m sure you have plenty to offer as well):

“I’m going to get into sculpting this year.  It’s one of the five most difficult art-forms known to man, but I think I’m up to it. My friend, who’s a fellow at NYU, says I have the hands and the eye for it.”

OR

“I’m going to lose twenty pounds and keep it off, this time.  This new diet, XYZ, is the only one that works.  I’ve checked into it.”

So yeah.  Everyone was talking the big talk.  But in my case my “everyone” was mostly in cyberspace. I know. Sad.

It was when one of my youtube “friends” whom I’ve never actually met in person, @SooperChorus, put together a New Years resolution challenge, where he promised to pick the best video responses to feature in his next post, that my interest was peaked.  What sort of resolutions would I make?  Would stating my goals / resolutions for all the world to see be any different than telling a few people at the water cooler?  And, isn’t the internet my own personal water cooler?  Would doing so make me feel more accountable to actually achieve them? And most importantly, what would all of my famous, snooty, celebrity friends and clients think?  To date, they’ve basically trembled and reveled in awe at my chutzpah, and my willingness to be so transparent in such FUN and INTERESTING ways. Nah… they wouldn’t be a problem.  Hmmm.

It all started with a question to my man, M.C. Nugget*, “Do you know how to record a video while I am sitting here at my iMac?”  You see, we are all about professional videos, with cameras, lights, mics and things, but I’ve just never really done video with my desktop computer.  I took one look at myself sitting in front of the screen, and – uh – NO.

As they said in the old H.R. Puffinstuff kid’s show, “MAKEUP!!!“

This had to be out-of-the-box – at least from all the other video responses, if I was going to publish it.

So – well, without further adieu, here is my video response to @SooperChorus, with a list of my 2012 New Year’s Resolutions.

DISCLAIMER:  I actually have a real list of my own… some of which did not make this video…  Some things are just for ME, un-kay?

ENJOY MY LOVELIES!  And then be sure to read on, to see what happened!

If your browser or email does not show the video box above, click the box below to be taken to the video on Youtube.

The end result?  I was chosen by @SooperChorus as one of three video responses to be featured.  He edited my video (and left off my #5)  but I didn’t mind.  I was actually REALLY SHOCKED because when posted it, I mentioned in the comments I was probably disqualified because he requested videos of a minute or less, and mine was FOUR minutes.  I guess ya just can’t ignore greatness.  HEH HEH.

Check out HIS video featuring ME (it’s very SILLY – but did you expect anything else?) here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjNaiPm3Ngw&feature=colike

My Question of the Week

I know, I don’t do that – but it sounded too cool…

What are your plans for Delving into Twelve?

Think about it and post a reply here.

Stay tuned next week for a slide show of more MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN MOMENTS.  Oh!  Or maybe a new TECHNO BABE MOMENTS.  See you then!

*For you newbies out there, M.C. Nugget (aka Nuggie, Emcee Nugget, etc) is my beau – an actor who actually WORKS in Hollywood– also formerly known as Fred the Wonder Chicken or FWC — I assign “aliases” to all of my friends and family, so their antics can remain anonymous.  I am the only person I know who doesn’t care if people know what I’ve been up to.  So I protect their identities!
